In our role as outreach workers we support carers across Powys by providing them with up to date information about services and referring them to other specialist agencies that can assist them.

We also support carers by helping to identify ways in which they can have a short break from their caring role, either as a couple of hours linked in with respite agencies or, if the carer is in crisis, we can work towards finding them a longer break such as a weekend. We can also attend meetings with social services if a carer requests it to act as an advocate on their behalf.

Our work also involves working closely with other agencies, both regional and local to identify sources of support for carers. Among these agencies are Crossroads, Red Cross, the local benefits and Citizen advice bureaus and Social Services teams and Primary Care workers. We also link in closely with locally based support groups, some generic for carers and others more specialised.

We work with these groups and individual carers to create social events that are both enjoyable and informative. By working closely with these groups and other relevant organisations we aim to provide carers with the high quality support service they need and deserve. We also work towards both raising awareness of carers and their needs and identifying hidden carers not yet receiving support by attending network events and regularly sending out publicity.

In our role as outreach workers we support young carers across Powys by providing them with up to date information about local services and supporting them in accessing these services. We also support young carers by helping to identify ways in which they can have a short break from their caring role.

We have regular support groups that act as a social break for young carers and we also organise regional events, giving young carers across Powys the chance to socialise together. We can also attend meetings with social services or other agencies if a young carer requests it, to act as an advocate on their behalf and to ensure that they understand everything that is being discussed and are part of the decision making process.

We also help to raise awareness of young carers issues by linking in with local schools and youth groups as well as working with Social Services and Primary Care. Our young carers can also access us for one to one support if they feel that their caring role is becoming to hard and they want to talk to someone about it. Through this work and through our publicity we also aim to identify more young carers that are currently not receiving any support in their caring role.
