Brecon Young Carers

The Brecon division of Young Carers is gearing up for the planned activities for 2005. There are plans for a group of members to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. The Wales Young Carer Festival has now been agreed for 24th to 25th August at the Royall Welsh Show Showground, Builth Wells. I look forward to seeing you all. We may put together some entertainments of our own for it.

The weekly ‘get-togethers’ are still ongoing and take place on a Thursday night where members are enjoying Tenpin Bowling, Table Tennis and Pool. For those members who are a little older I am keen to sort out a social evening for us all where we can meet up for a drink or something because we haven’t caught up in quite a while. So if you’re interested you can contact your outreach worker through the main office.

Contributions from young carers:

Quote from a Young Carer from our Welshpool Club offering help to other Young Carers by using a daily diary to help distress:

"The way I feel about my Mum is that I’m scared she’s going to die, but in a way I do want her to so that she wont suffer anymore. I feel selfish because it’s like I’m taking her away from the rest of my family. But it’s ok to feel scared and frightened and if you want advice, I say write it down in a diary. But if it isn’t a thing you want to remember, I loved burning my pages. "

Quote from a Young Carer who now regularly attends Newtown Chill Club and sometimes Welshpool too and has found that the Clubs give her that “something to look forward to”
each week:

"I don’t know what to do. Because I have nothing to keep my mind off things, I start having anxiety attacks. I wish there was someway that I had something to look forward to, and keep my mind off other stuff. "

Young Carers are great

"On Saturday 12 February a lot of us from Brecon, Llandod, Builth and Knighton went to Cardiff to see ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl at the New Theatre. When we were watching the play the time went very fast. The play was very magical and what I mean by magical is people would disappear and a mouse would appear, and on the way home everyone had MacDonalds."

I am a young carer...

...and have been for two years. We as a group have been to places like Oakwood and to pantomimes. As a big group we went to watch a pantomime on the 12 February in Cardiff. It was called ‘The Witches’ by Road Dahl. The thing I liked about the pantomine was the way the people disappeared it was really magical and funny as well. I really enjoyed it.

The thing I love about Young Carers is that you make new friends every time you go somewhere. Lately we have been going to Quackers in a small group. There are groups from Knighton, Brecon, Builth, Llandrindod and Newtown.
