Summer event update…
You’ve probably guessed by now that the event
we were hoping to put on this summer with other young carer groups
across Wales has been delayed. Basically, we are waiting for the funding.
I wrote a letter to Jane Hutt at the Welsh Assembly Government asking
her if they could help us by donating some money towards the event.
I am now waiting for a reply. Just to let you know, I have not given
up on the idea, we are still working with the young carer network
and I really hope that we will locate some funding for an event next
year.
If you would like to support us in our effort to raise money you can
write a letter of support for the event and post it to the main office
address, every little helps!

Back
to school trauma!
Aaah.....it’s that time of year again, where the school
uniform comes out of the drawer and you have to start thinking
about going back to school and coping with the workload.
School can be a difficult time for young carers as there are
often problems with getting to school or being able to do your
homework on time. |
Below are a couple of useful websites that can help you with your
schoolwork and revision over the eight months:
www.pupiline.net
Features personal stories from children and teenagers of their experiences
of such topics as bullying, dating, exam stress and health issues.
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/revision
BBC Bitesize offers help with revision for GCSEs and other exams,
including games and quizzes.
www.britannica.com
Encyclopaedia Britannica online has information on loads of different
things
Don’t forget that you
can also contact your outreach worker and talk to them about any problems
that you may be having at school, sometimes we can help you to talk
to a teacher or headteacher about your role as a young carer, helping
the school to understand your responsibilities. Remember that it is
not your fault that you are a carer and you are entitled to support
from your school, so if you feel they need to know more about young
carers, let us know and we can send them some information.
If you have any stories or views about being a young carer in school,
good or bad, please send them in to us at the main office and we’ll
put them in another edition for other young carers to share.
CHILL
CLUB
‘Chill Club’ is the name for Newtown’s after-school
club for young carers.
The young carers get together fortnightly on a Wednesday at
Rekindle, Newtown. The time is used to enable all young carers
to take time out of their caring role and mix with other children
experiencing similar situations.
At Rekindle there are lots of games, computers, Internet access,
patio and Barbeque to keep young carers occupied.
During the summer they have tried to keep themselves fit by
going to the playing fields. |
 |
The club also organised a t-shirt printing workshop and a trip to
the cinema to see Shrek 2.
In the future we hope to have the Chill Club on a weekly basis, which
will give the young carers more time-out.
Young Mental Health Carers Project Montgomeryshire
This project meets the needs of young mental
health carers in Montgomeryshire. It is recognised that carers in
mental health have very different needs to those who care for someone
with a physical illness or disability. Being a carer in mental health
means you have to provide more emotional support than practical. Therefore
it is very useful to have someone to talk to who knows what you are
going through. Lisa Turner, who was once a young carer herself, is
able to provide this support through the project and can empathise
with the young carers. It provides some ‘time-out’ for
each young carer on a one-to-one basis.
Within the project we have GREAT FUN. It is a way in which young mental
health carers can let off steam and be in an environment where they
are free to talk about caring issues. It is also a chance for young
mental health carers to build up trusting and valuable relationships
with other young carers. When young mental health carers meet up with
Lisa they can use the time however they want. They may want to completely
avoid the subject of caring, its up to them. We could go for lunch,
walk the dog or chill at Rekindle. If you think you may benefit from
the support then please ring Lisa, Young Persons Liaison Officer,
at Rekindle on 01686 621 266.
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers
