Powys Carers Service Newsletter - Autumn 2004 - Page: 1 - 2- 3- 4- 5

18th June seems a long time ago but thanks very much for all those who attended the ‘do’ we had at the Monty Club, Newtown.

I thought the Band was good and it was nice to meet new people and to have a chat briefly when "Platform Soul " paused for breath.

I am glad that Kate Young was able to present some flowers to Pat Edwards from Talerddig, Pat has just retired after 40 years as a district nurse and is going to Buckingham Palace to be presented with her MBE.
Many thanks to Val Howard, Lady Mayor of Newtown for formally starting the evening and for being so encouraging about the importance of carers and their role. We wish her well after finishing her time as Mayor.

My special thanks for all those young carers and those who were a little older who got up and danced. It was great to see everyone having fun and marking "Carers Week" with a bang and not a whimper.

On 14th June myself and my family were fortunate to have been selected to receive a holiday at Pontins in Blackpool which was funded by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

This holiday by The Princes Royal Trust is just for carers and their cared for and families.

My husband, son and granddaughter came with me and we had a wonderful time. There was plenty of entertainment, we had a mad hatters tea party which was excellent the children enjoyed themselves.

We were all well looked after especially by The Princes Royal Trust helpers. There was also lots of information about carers and the problems we face in day to day living, also you were able to speak to the welfare rights about any benefits that you may be entitled to.

My son has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, learning difficulties and autistic tendencies and my granddaughter is suspected of having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as well and I find it difficult taking them on holiday because of their behaviour, but at Pontins I found the experience a lot easier because there were other parent carers with children with the same difficulties.

I would encourage anyone who is able to receive this holiday to go as we all had a lovely time.
The photo is of my son and granddaughter meeting Postman Pat at Pontins.

"I am a parent of Paul who is blind, has epilepsy and severe learning difficulties. He is 13 years old and a lovely young man now and we think the world of him. However, just lately he has got very hard to deal with his "teenage strops" besides everything else. It would be great if I, like other parents, could switch off from worrying about whether it’s time for a drink, food, nappy change or medicine or if he is okay and is not having a fit.

We have asked for Direct Payments from Social Services to deal with our support, but we are still waiting for a reply. There is a desperate need for a Respite Centre in Montgomeryshire and I and a group of parents have got together a campaign to make people aware of our plight. It is called Star Centre Project, and we are hoping it doesn’t take forever to get this off the ground. We love our children dearly, but it is nice to switch off sometimes and let your own batteries recharge."

PRTC Norwich Union Breaks…

You will be pleased to hear, that Norwich Union have just informed us that they will continue funding Breaks for Carers at Pontin's for a further three years.

This is fantastic news and means that another 3000+ carers will be given the chance of a break over the next three years.
