Montgomeryshire Young Carers News
Jane Keay, Young Carers Outreach Worker,
Montgomeryshire
We have
GREAT news from both our After School Clubs - As from the beginning
of November, CHILL CLUB in Newtown, and RECESS CLUB in Welshpool
are now meeting every week.
This is a great opportunity for us all to keep in touch more
regularly, to share ideas, moans and groans, problems, news
and views, not to mention food and friendships and mutual support.
If you are not attending already, but would like to and you
live in the area please give me a ring, and don’t let
transport be a problem as I can often help with that. Or quite
literally DROP IN on the night and see for yourself.

6.30pm at REKINDLE - 2 Commercial Street, Newtown
RECESS CLUB Meets on Thursdays between 4.00pm and 6.00pm at WELSHPOOL

As part of our club meetings we do invite others to join us for a
special event and sometimes we go on activities which take part outside
the meeting place, for example events planned for the coming month
include swimming, bowling and a Christmas meal out. So ring me to
make sure.
See you there.

One of the greatest areas of concern and stress for many Young Carers
is managing at School.
It is often the case when pressure is put on youngsters to produce
extra amounts of work, that they find themselves in the position of
not being able to cope because of the demands, whether physical or
mental, of their caring role at home.
Due to increased awareness raising being undertaken by the outreach
workers within our schools, teachers and heads are becoming more informed
of these extra curricula concerns carried, often anonymously, by Young
Carers and in some cases welcoming the workers into schools to provide
extra support on the premises. One very pleasing outcome has been
that I have been invited to start up a DROP IN for all Young Carers
in Welshpool High School. So please use it. I shall be in Kay Jones’
room, next to the main office, every Thursday at break time between
11.00am and 11.20am. Please feel free to bring your buttie, biscuit,
drink and have a natter. If you feel you need a more private talk
this can be arranged. Well done Welshpool High – lets hope the
news spreads.

Rodgers -
Winner Wales Domiciliary Care Practitioner Award 2004
 |
On Friday
October 29th, Chrissie Rodgers, a Carer Support Worker with
Brecknock and Radnor Crossroads won the Domiciliary Care Practitioner
Award at the Wales Care Awards 2004 at Celtic Manor Resort Newport.
The Minister for Health and Social Care Services, Jane Hutt
A.M. presented her with a 500-million years-old Welsh slate
trophy, designed by Inigo Jones.
Chrissie was nominated for her dedication to the personal care
of Chris Bates, a blind, quadraplegic young man, who passed
away in August at the age of 22. |
Chrissie had been caring for Chris for more than 4 years, during which,
in the words of the young man’s father, Peter Bates, “she
not only forged a true friendship with him, but also learned to communicate
with him. She did this by watching him closely for his eye movements,
recognising a multitude of body language signals and generally getting
to know him so intimately, she was usually one step in front of him!”
Chrissie Rodgers is a true example of the caring people who work in
the voluntary sector throughout Wales. Left is Chrissie with her trophy,
together with Peter and Jan Bates, the parents of Christopher Bates.
Young Carer
receives Youth in Community Award
Sergiy Karpyk and his family arrived from the Ukraine two years
ago. They spoke very little English, but in a short time Sergiy
mastered the language and is now training to be a chef. During
his time in the UK, Sergiy has continually supported his sister
and mother both emotionally and financially.
It was a unanimous decision of the Sorpotomists to award Sergiy
with the Youth in Community Award.
