Disability Powys/Anabledd Powys is an umbrella organisation of disabled people and groups living, working, studying and operating in Powys. Its mission is to promote the creating of an inclusive society by:

  • Empowering disabled people in Powys by providing training and information
  • Acting as a consultative and lobbying body and working with all agencies to improve services for disabled people in Powys

The aims of Disability Powys are:-

  • To assist and support disabled people in Powys and to encourage their involvement in promoting the social model of disability and disability issues through the provision of information, disability awareness and disability equality training to raise awareness on how discrimination can be eliminated
  • To bring together disabled people in Powys to act as a consultative body to develop policy and improve services for disabled people
  • To build a stronger disability movement in Powys by empowering disabled people
  • To provide information, training and support for individuals/groups to help them develop and become more sustainable.

Current work being undertaken by Disability Powys

Powys County Council has named Disability Powys in its Disability Strategy as the appropriate agency to deliver some of the services that are essential for disabled people to lead an independent and active life, and to promote social inclusion. In this context, Disability Powys is considering developing such services as:-

  • Disability Information and Advice Line (DIAL)
  • Independent Advocacy Service
  • Direct Payments Management
  • RADAR Key sales

Disability Powys has three qualified trainers among its staff and can deliver a range of training to groups and individuals on topics such as the Disability Discrimination Act, Disability Equality and Assertiveness for Disabled People.

Disability Powys is working with key statutory and voluntary sector agencies to ensure that the interests of disabled people are fully represented, and that disabled people play a full and active part in the planning and decision making process on issues that affect their daily lives.
