Carers Week - Celebrity Carers

Cilla Black is amongst a few celebrities who have publicly pledged their support for carers week 2004. Best known for her TV shows Blind Date and Surprise! Surprise! She became a carer when she looked after her husband Bobby.

Giving her support Cilla said: "Having helped to care for my husband Bobby – who sadly died of cancer in 1999- I am very aware of how difficult, yet rewarding, looking after someone can be. Often carers are unaware of the support and services available to them and that’s why I’m delighted to support carers week 2004."

Dr Rosemary Leonard best known as the regular doctor on BBC1 Breakfast television and she also writes a weekly page for the Daily Express. Rosemary is still a practicing doctor, working in south London. She says:
"Carers are an unseen army, battling compassionately and steadfastly every day for those they love. In my role as a GP I see the amazing, dedicated work that carers do every day."

Powys Carers Service aims to make the most of carers week 2004 by organising local events across the county to help raise awareness and to encourage carers and support agencies to take part.

On the next page is a list of the local activities that are going on in your area, if you would like more information about them please contact the person listed.

Carers week is our opportunity to ensure that local MPs and National Government take onboard the issues that carers face and we look forward to meeting you and getting your views and suggestions about service development at a local and national level.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has a very personal interest in carers as his mother Patricia was diagnosed with MS when he was five years old. Sadly, Patricia died two years ago after a thirty-year battle with the illness. Laurence has put his name to this year’s carers week. In support he says:

"We’re delighted to offer whatever profile we can. I do think ‘there but for the grace of God go I’, anybody can develop a disease and anybody can become a carer."
